my lfs has some onion plants and they look pretty cool, but i dont think my tank has enough lighting for one. i have a single 18w 24" T8 bulb and the tank is a 38gal, 20" deep. so far the only things ive been able to keep are hornwort, Anubias nana, java fern, and cryptocoryne wendtii.

will i be able to successfully keep an onion plant? oh and i dont dose with fertilizer or inject CO2 or anything like that.

I have a fixture that says "3 x 21 watt T5" but the bulbs say "39 watt T5" on my 65 gallon tall tank.

So I either have 1 wpg or almost 2 wpg, of T5 daylight tubes. You have woefully inadequate lighting, if you doubled it, you might be able to grow onion plant. However, I have a 27 inch tall tank and the leaves touch the surface, and trail along the surface for a good foot or so.

In this link is a picture of MY onion plant, plus a brief description of how I grow it.

My onion plant does fairly well, I see a new leaf every week or so. It has a long acclimation period. Here's a good source on how to prepare it for your tank:

yeah i know my lighting is crap...
i think ill get some different anubias species instead then.

i may be able to pick up a 78w system in a couple months actually. maybe ill try onion plants if i get that system.

I have kept onion plants in what I would call "crap" lighting, and they did fine . . . and yes, they will get huge

I liked them mainly because cichlids and plant-eating fish won't bother them, and becasue they are very hardy . . .
