I have recently set up my 55 gallon tank, and was wondering if i needed to put in plants for anything other then looks. I was thinking that i needed some so the fish had places to hang out and kinda hide from other aggressive fish?

Plants aren't needed but they do add to the overall appearance of the tank. They're also one more place for beneficial bacteria to hang out.

If aggression is your issue, plants can help by breaking up the line-of-sight. However, rocks, wood, flower pots, caves and whatever else you can think of will also work.
