Hello everybody,

My name is Yannis and this is my first post in this forum.

I am thinking of purchasing a school of red hook silver dollars :D but I am a bit confused with the scientific name, and I want everything to be cleared before ordering.

I find the following names that all refer to red hook silver dollar:

Myloplus rubripinnis
Myleus rubripinnis
Myletes rubripinnis

Are all the above the same species?
If yes what is the correct scientific name (Myloplus rubripinnis?) ?
My LFS imports them under the name Myleus rubripinnis, but they also make some imports under the name Myleus sp. Rubripinnis RED. Are you familiar with this? (Icannot find any info on Myleus sp. Rubripinnis RED....)
I plan to house the silver dollars in a 750 liters / 198 gallons tank with some Geophagus sp. tapajos red head.
How many silver dollars should I order? How many gallons per fish should I consider?
Thank you

I repost because for some reason the initial post is not clear:

I think the people most knowledgeable would be in the other characins sub forum. I wish i could help you. But i would like to see your setup, i love red head tapajos

I'm no expert. But I believe them to be myloplus rubripinnis. Don't hold me to that though! The Red in the name is likely a clarification name - to ensure everyone is aware they red hooks. Again, don't quote me.

As for numbers. With a tank that size you can have quite a few. I wouldn't go any less than 5 as they prefer schools. However, I wouldn't go any more than 10, as they are reknown messy eaters and will add a lot of bioload to your tank.

We want pictures too! :D

Thanks!
In the tank there are currently 9 large discuses. The decoration is just fine sand and driftwood (Amazon biotope).

I don't have any Geophagus yet but I think they would be a nice addittion for the bottom of the tank.

I was thinking of ordering 11 Myleus rubripinnis, but 9 might be better.....

Pictures will follow when I will have the fish delivered, don’t know when yet..
The fish will be about 2 inches long...

I love biotopes! I have a 135g peruvian amazon biotope. In which I have 5x Silver Dollars.

Similarly to dollars, geo's like groups of 5+ so dependant on the size of the species you chose 5-10 may be desirable.

I would go for 9 as the extra couple may be a little too much! Also, watch them with the discus, they may be a little boisterous when larger and out compete them for food and cause stress.

I will remove the discus.... Discus can live happily only with discus. I would never mix them with Dollars.!

I am thinking of keeping the dollars in a small tank (31 gallons) for some time in order to check their health and grow them a bit and then move them to the main tank alone and later add some Geos (4-5)
I may add some plants (anubias & Java fern) for decoration but as I understand they will not last long...

I have my dollars with amazon swords, dwarf hairgrasses and other plants and so far so good. They are only small at the moment, size of a coin. Some geos + dollars + a large shoal of tetras would look great IMO. :)

I love tetras! What kind of dollars do you have? at what temperature?
