Hi,

I have had african cichlids for may years and are very familiar with that, but I have never had any south americans.

During a recent purchase of a used tank I got some american cichlids that the previous owner could not sell or give away. I was thinking that I could give them away but they have kind of grown on me.

I am now thinking about establishing an SA cichlid+ tank. The tank I have for the purpose is approx. 140 Gallons (530L) and measures 5,3 * 2 * 2 feet.

The stock I have received from the previous owner is:

5 Gold Saum (Green Terrors) (ranging from 1 - 5 inches)
2 Oscars (approx. 4 inch)
2 Jack Dempsey (approx. 2 inch)

I was think that I would get rid of the Jack Dempseys since it would appear that they are not really South American cichlids, and I can easily find someone to take them.

There is one pair between the 5 GT and it seems the Oscars is a pair aswell although this is not confirmed.

My questions is:

1. Can I successfully keep the GT pair and the Oscar pair in the tank?
2. Would it be possible to add a small shoal (6-10) Silver Dollars?
3. Which SA bottom feeders can be added as clean up crew?
4. Using roots / rocks for territory dividers should I try to build high in the middle of the tank, or 2/3. Will it be better to try to make a broader dividing area?
5. What plant species from SA would be hardy enough to survive the fish and the less than ideal plant lighting that SA fish seem to enjoy.
6. I can understand that the water values where the fish naturally lives are very varied from soft/low ph to hard/ high ph. My tap water are quite high in PH and hard, would I need to treat the water somehow?

I hope to get some help and ideas on these questions, ideally from people who has actually tried something similar. I have read the descriptions and articles on the fish from many different sources on the net and in theory the composition could work.

Keeping the O & GT pair,, if they get along,, is pretty much a cap for the tank. I'm not talking about bioload as much as I am about the aggression levels of the fish if they are actual pairs. Adonis plecs ROCK for tank cleanup.

I think that the O's and GT's will be just fine together in that size of a tank. If you have any issues I think it would be due to aggression and that will take some time, considering the sizes of the fish you have described.

I have a 6' 125 gal with a pair of Dempseys suppressing a 12"+ Oscar, 7" Trimac, 5" W African Jewel & 12" BGK into 20% of the tank...

I've found breeding pairs of Green Terrors / Saums to be even more aggressive than a breeding pair of Dempseys...

If the Oscars and the Saums have eggs/fry at the same time, I would expect that tank to be WWIII...

I have a personal rule of 1 breeding pair per tank... except with Dwarf Cichlids kept in large tanks... I don't think you should do it...

Although the breeding pair of Oscars and one male GT or 2 female GTs may work nicely...

1-Yeah sure! They all should be really good together. BUT, you never know. They all have tempers of some sort. Absolutely try it!
2-Are you considering 6-10 Silver dollars or a 6-10" Silver Dollar? A couple would be okay(maybe 3) but I wouldn't do 6-10 or of that size right now. Go for a 3-4 incher(s)!
3-Everyone of them except maybe the Dollars will be gravel diggers, food searchers! They will be in the gravel all of the time.
4-Keep the landscaping all through out the tank! Just keep in mind that the bigger guys need to get through as well as the little guys! Adjust accordingly!
5-Plants? LOL Go plastic. With Oscars they will be uprooting all of them all of the time! Its cool but you'll be "repotting" them time to time!
6-Its been a long time since I lived in a Hard water area. Just ask what products to best use fron you're local petstore. That or someone else will chime in and give you knowledge on it! Its pretty easy to prep for I do remember that! Sounds fun! Enjoy!!!

I was thinking about getting 6-10 silver dollars, they are quite uncommon where I live, and I can only get some rather small ones, i would put them at around 1 inch at the moment at the shop where they have them. I heard that they were shoal fish and you should not keep less than 6. I also read that they should do nicely even with agressive cichlids, due to they speed and agility. I was also thinking that I should build some size on them in a different tank and introduce them around 2 inches, when there is no fry in the tank and the cichlid pairs have settled down some and divided territory.

Regards

It could work out with that size tank.My oscar was deeply offended by silver dollars so I had to remove them.
Plants will get wrecked.

Im not to sure about the Dollars and how many to buy.. I would think that if you put them in at a later time it may cause a bit of complications though. Everyone will be settled then you bring them in. Its usually the cause to start probs....

If that is what you want to do though, be sure to rearrange the interior layout to make the old fish feel like their in a new environment!
