I bought a 100 gallon tank that had a small leak. 72x18x19 (no center brace)
I was going to re-seal just the leak with GE Silicone I, then thought to myself "why not just do a complete re-seal?" So I complete stripped all the silicone off of every plate. Everything is clean and apart.

Now I'm wondering what silicone to use to do a complete re-seal. I'm afraid that GE Silicone I wouldn't be strong enough to have 1000 pounds of water pressure pushing on the wall. Or is it?

I really don't want to find out the hard way with 100 gallons of water on my floor.

Thanks in advance. :thumbsup::popcorn:

i dont know about just the silicone .. thats why you have bracing around the top and bottom .. its what supports the weight of the water and the silicone is for waterproofing.

all 4 of my tanks have a steel or wood bracing around the top and bottom so im not sure if just silicone can hold it. IMO i would say no

Shucks, I took everything apart including the wood bracing. I was planning to re-seal that also. Thanks for your opinion.

What do you others think?

if you have the bracing still you can use that and you should be ok .. since it would be about the same as it was before .. but you should not try to use only silicone

Hi, I have used GE Silicone I for years with great results. Most recently did a 100, a 120 and a 150, all just cut-outs and reseals. Also just did a 100 long with new frames all the way, 5 pieces of glass and 2 frames. I always feel better with bracing, plastic being first choice, "euro" (IE glass) braces as a second choice. Wood would be a last choice IMO. Be sure and use a harsh solvent like acetone beofre applying the new silicone. Good Luck!

I really don't understand how the bracing would help. Doesn't it just sit on the glass? If It was a whole piece I would understand.

My mistake. My bracing is plastic.
Alright I'll clean it really well. I've used rubbing acohol but I'll purchase acetone later today.

That's great to know but it's just cut-outs. Have you used it in a 100+gal Complete reseal?
And thanks.

Sorry for sounding so rude.
I'd just rather be safe than sorry.

Bump...

What silicone would you recommend me using for a complete reseal on a 100 gallon?
Anyone?

Tank builders in my area use GE1200 Construction Grade Silicone. It is 100% fish safe and clear in color.

Can be a little tough to source, but well worth the effort.
