Just to clarify, when I vent my Red Devil, do I need to "poke, squeeze, apply pressure, etc .." to it's genital area, or will it be visible without any of this..?

No, you don't need to do anything like that. Just flip over the fish and compare to one of the clear venting pics available on this site. It is easy to tell the sexes apart in larger fish. You may have some difficulty in very small fish though.
