Okay, since my internet is down I have to do this at my friends house. In the last couple of weeks or so, did some changes to my SW. Originally it had 3.5 kg of LR in there, now I've got a total of 5kg, with about 1.5kg in the cannister, replacing the sponge filter and such, so now my cannister has carbon, purigen and live rock. Is that alright as far as setting up the filter goes?

Also rearranged the landscape, made a cave thingy ready for dwarf lion. And today I came home from work, to find one of the little crabs that I caught, broke my floating hydrometer with his claws! Pissed me off to the max and I punished him by poking him with a stick! Only had that for a week and now its broken, argh gotta get another one now. SOrry haven't got the photos with me now, willtry to get them up asap, and this time, smaller :D

Also got a Berlin airlift protein skimmer, but I got a question about how it works. Is the foam inside the skimmer meant to bubble up all the way into the collection tray at the top? 'Cause the bubbles in mine don't seem to reach to the top, yet there is a steady rise in brown water in the collection tray each day. Is that normal?

One last question, will it be alright to keep the small crabs with clowns and lionfish? Will they try to attack them, 'cause right now I haven't noticed them attack the mono angels, maybe because they are active swimmers. But what if it was my lion, who likes to lounge around all relaxed and stuff? Will the little crabs (especially the one with a big enough claw to break the hydrometer!) pose a threat to my fishes?

thanks guys for your help. My tank is running into its 6th week of cycling, yet I still don't have the confidence to actually purchase fish yet. I am waiting to get rid of the mono angels, still considering if I should eat them or let them go, lol. Params are still running wild. What are the ideal params for introducing new fish into the aquarium? My nitrate seems to be the biggest problem. PH is at a steady 8.0 in the last few weeks. Ammonia is a little high, nitrite is perfect, but nitrate is always staying between 40-80mg/l. i performed water changes, and fed my fish less, but it seems to be the same still. Argh well, maybe it will be easier to adjust without the fish in there.

I dont know what kind of crabs you are talking about but poking one with a stick on your part sounds like you need to let all your inhabitants go or back to the lfs.leaving a glass hydrometer float around when your not looking at the salinty is not bright on your part anyway maybe someone should poke you.Anyway dwarf lion,a pair of clowns, and crabs.Lets remember this is a new tank and only 20 gallons your talking about adding more fish and on another post even asking about a snowflake eel.Sounds like you need to pick up some books and do alot more research your heading for the big crash.

Couldn't agree with you more on this one. I have a 20 gallon marine tank and it only has live rock and a false percula clownfish. I want to add a couple of damsels but that is it.
Lord Gaz, Go to the library and RESEARCH, RESEARCH, AND MORE RESEARCH on marine tanks before stocking one. 20 gallons is not very much at all, and they have to be stocked lightly

Like these guys have said Lord Gaz, you need to do some more reasearch. Also, IMO live rock in a canister isn't going to do anything but be bad for the tank. All of the things living on it will die in the canister and ruin your water quality. If I were you, I would put it into the tank, trade the Monos in, and look at getting yourself a new tank down the road. Lion Fish are predators and they are messy. Good luck with everything and give the skimmer time, it is breaking in.

Thanks guys for your comments! Yeah I know about the research, still doing that whenever I have the time to. The crabs will probably have to go back into the wild, I don't think I want them with my fish. So a dwarf lion won't be alright in a 20G? What about on its own? I'm trying to find the monos a safe home, but not much people are after them, not when they're SW anyway. Maybe I should eat them...hmm..... but its wierd eating your own pet. Can't get pass that.

I thought I had to leave the hyrdometer in there, guess this lesson has taught me otherwise.

So live rocks in cannisters don't work do they? Damn no wonder my water params don't seem to be getting better. Another lesson learnt. I guess I have to get another kg of purigen in there.

Thanks again for all your help. You guys teach me heaps!
