How big in diameter are ornate bichirs that get at least 24" long?

HOw would an ornate do with a marbled pim?

Whats there growth rate like?

Ornates don't get 24 inches. If you want that you should look for something like a Poly Endlicheri, and that will prob be a stretch. I don't know the diameter of full grown Endli's, if I had to guess I would say 3-4 inches.
The ornate will be fine with the Pim has long has the Pim can't fit in the ornates mouth. On the flip side, I guess a huge Pim could eat a baby poly but I don't know much about pims at all though.

^Ornates get to 27" mate what Poly you thinking of?^Big Ornate from what I've seen can be as thick as say a tennis ball or baseball....Growth rate semi quick between 1"-2" a month for the first 8 months....And with a Pim it should be okay AS Long as they stay the same size wouldn't want them eating eachother.....But Marbled pims need big tanks too

I have never seen an Ornate to get to 27 inches.
A tennis ball and baseball are both about 3 inches in diameter. So 3-4 inches is a good guess.

thanks I wont do it then.

Look at the Sticky....Btw I've never seen a 6ft Arapaima but they do get over 6ft....Nor have I actually seen a 2ft Trinidad Pleco.....

yeah dude, I don't think aquaculture is asking for the fun it of it. He wants to keep one. Those are wild sizes. In captivity they don't get 27 inches.

From the sticky:
"Species and sizes
maximum known sizes often smaller in captivity..."
I read this as: here are the max known sizes (in the wild), they are smaller in captivity.

Hey You can never be certain on fish mate always plan for Maximum size. IE A Congicus gets to 36"+ but they are not common....Also I only expected my Senegal to get around 12" since he is a Petsmart CB but he's now getting close to 12.5" only one year after I got him at 3.5".....In other words Expect Maximum size or you could be in trouble....Also may I underline the word OFTEN this leaves room for error....Not Often you see a 30" Pacu but it does happen

I never said anything about the OP asking for the heck of it I'm just stating the fact of Ornate Maximum size regardless of what they usually get to.....

fair enough, I understand the point you are making. All I am saying is that aquaculture should not be under the impression that his Ornate is going to hit 24 or 27 inches. By far, most of them never reach this size in captivity. Few may have, I honestly don't know for sure. It is more than safe to assume the Ornate will grow around 18-20 inches. He shouldn't avoid the Ornate based on the rare event that it grows into species-specifc monster.
