Does anyone know what species of tree provides us with the common driftwood we find at local fish stores? For instance, manzanita wood is very common at stores, but come to find out, there are like 100 species of manzanita tree. Any insight?

pretty sure African Mopani is pretty popular too. The thing about driftwood is it can be any type of wood that washes up on the beach, so the term "driftwood" DOES get a little confusing, as you've noticed.

If you are curious I would just ask the place you're buying it from

So does that come from the "malaysian" tree?

As far as I know Malaysian, mopani and manz come from different areas. They have pretty different properties so would be shocked to learn they come from a similar source. At the end of the day you can go with looks as long as it's water logged, I wouldn't even know what to call local collected driftwood.
