I've got a canon G11 (it's a prosumer model full manual basically the best you can get without going DSLR, good low light performance).

Would this greatly increase my fish photography potential? I'm not interested in buying a DSLR at this stage

Thoughts? The G11 is a supberb camera, do a google on it to see the specs.

i dont know about the camera but a speedlight is a great purchase. allows you to use small apertures and fast shutter speeds for shots with great focus and depth of field. you cant go wrong!

Thanks, Now the debate on wether to get the expensive, medium expensive or cheaper canon speedlites...

This is it here but it's mounted on the smaller G9, not the G11 as I have which is a big improvement on the G9 in terms of light performance...I'd be best to bounce light off the ceiling into the actual tank? Would this work?

bouncing it into the ceiling may be too high, may not get enough light back into the tank. try bouncing it into a styrofoam box placed upside down on the tank, or a white plastic rain gutter :)

yeah, you can always do that. bouncing it into something can help avoid the 'spotlight' effect

I don't know about Canon speed light Nor the G11. I see that the Speedlight 430ex II has the power to shoot wireless E-TTL. I don't know if your G11 has a internal commander to control the speed light in wireless mode, but a hot shoe cord would work good as well. If you don't want to get a speed light commander unit (nikon is a su-800), then I would go with a canon speed light equivalent to nikons sb400 and a hot shoe cord.

I have Nikon equipement now but used Canon for years. the G11 is IMO the best non dslr you can buy. try to get the flash off the camera to shoot down into the tank. you can wrap a piece of tissue around the flashtube to subdue the light.
