Quick jag Q

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
a short answer is no.
they are owner responsive in that they can see and watch you readily from outside the tank. however they are not likely to be at the front begging or attacking you unless you have them in too small a tank.

All that said, i like the jags i have a lot. theyre awesome fish that grow fast and look pretty good too.
If you were going to get only 1 fish for a 75 or 90 gallon tank i would get a red devil/midas or a flowerhorn of some sort though. Jags just kind of do their own thing but will recognize you for food if they are hungry

Oh well that's kind of a bummer. Been wanting a jag as a wet pet for a while but guess there not. So what other fishes besides devils and o's make good wet pets?

Mine are very socialable.

I never had a oscar but i have a jag and red devil. The red devil is awesome for coming up to the top when i come in the room. The jag doesn't pay much attention to me but also an awesome fish. They are my favorite so far.

IME, Jags are not as owner responsive as the other two you mentioned. They do like to eat and are really cool fish... just don't have the personality of the other two. To even go a little further, all Parachromis are less owner responsive than Amphilophus. Again, this is IME.

My midas is a lot more owner responsive than my jag is. I just got them about two weeks ago from Rapps and the midas comes to the front every time I enter the room waiting for food.

I don't have the same opinion. I think they make an excellent wet pet. I had Jumbo for thirteen years. He was in the only tank I kept out of the fish room and in my living room.
I've had several adults over the last thirty years. All pretty much the same attitude.

Sorry to go against the grain.

Just wanted to add that I think Jags are a good wet pet... just don't have the personality of the other two.... again IME. If you really like Jags, I would say to go get one. I'm not trying to tell you NOT to get a Jag at all. I've had a few and they are great fish and look really cool. The largest one I owned was about 12" and he had a pretty out going personality. All fish have their own personality, but IME on the average the other two you mentioned have more. If you really have been wanting a Jag... go get one and enjoy.
