I was running this half full for a week or two when I got it due to a broken cross brace. I ordered replacement trim and got that installed last week, now its been full but without substrate for about a week and I got fed up with it. I decided to take all the sand (about 30lbs of black 3m colorquartz) out of my 20gal and mix in some of the brown/black mix from my 65 (both tanks had an overkill amount of sand anyways) to get a nice substrate going. I ended up with enough black leftover to keep a thin layer in my 20 as well, it'll do until I can find the cash to get another bag of black and flesh out both the 55 & the 20.

So anyways here's a quick iphone pic now that I have it pretty much set up like its going to be. I'm thinking of ways to add some cover for the fish--particularly the bichirs & knife--but right now nothing is coming to mind. I have a nice driftwood root in my 65 that forms a GREAT cave that I might move over, but I'm not sure I want to take anything out of the 65, I like it the way it is.

Thanks, the driftwood came from Manzman on here, I really dig it.

I'm not sure about adding plants to this one...I only have a single fluorescent bulb & can't afford anything else for a good long while & I don't want to mess with c02 injection or anything like that. I have two small plants in similar conditions in my 65...so far they haven't died, but they don't look great either.

The dark look is kind of on purpose anyways. I added a few more pounds of black sand to really darken up the substrate and get the red/black balance that I wanted in the first place.

Here's a pic from before (same as it was in the original pic)

And here's a pic from after. This balance is exactly what I was going for in the first place:) I think now I just want to change the light to an Aqua-glo like I have on my 65, brings the red out a little more.

I think instead of plants or anything I want to add some nice rocks...maybe dark gray &/or black slate....something like that.

I guess I'm going for a sort of dark, barren, almost volcanic type of look. If I DO add any plants...it would probably be a nice tall sword near the right side of the tank around the base of the driftwood. We'll see.

Edit: Oh...and I'm undecided about the crystal skull bottle :p Its right on the edge of 'pretty sweet' and 'dude thats lame.' I could fill it with sand/plant substrate and use it as a planter :p If I get what I'm after with rocks it'll probably come out of the tank since I'll need its floor space anyways. But for now I think its pretty cool....for now...

I personally think the skull's on the lame side. There's plenty of plants you could put in that you wouldn't need to change your lights or add co2 though.

Love the tank though. That drift is awesome

^ plants like what?

Looks good to me, I like the substrate mix. Try some Java Moss in your tank. I have horrible luck with plants but the Java Moss has been doing alright in my tank. I cannot say it is growing well, but it certainly is not dying. Everything else I tried died.

Here's a new pic. Took the skull out and moved my root from the 65 over. I'm not sold on the orientation, I've got lot of options and I had to just stop messing with it :nilly:

I just got offered another Senegal from a member here...thinking of rehoming one of my pictus and taking on the sen.
