I am going to drill my 75 gal tank and install some 1.5" bulkheads.

1 for intake to my filter, 1 for outflow to the tank

I can get some slip strainers from here http://www.coralreefsupply.com/index.php?aquarium=plumbing_screen

I have one of the 3.5" long strainers, they have 36 slots cut in them that measure 3/32" x 1.25" so the area of each slot = .117188 in/sq giving a grand total of 4.21875 in/sq of area for the water to flow into the bulkhead (or out) the interior area of 1.5" pvc =4.712389 in/sq, i figure that i can make up the slight difference with a few 1/8" holes drilled in the end of it.

question: If I can get the opening area = to or slightly greater than the interior area of the 1.5" pvc will the strainer still restrict the flow? (i know that each plumbing fitting i add will restrict flow, as will the distance the pump is from the tank)

The 3.5" strainers work much better with my set up, i can go with the 6" if possible but will not look as good ascetically.

thanks

you lost me after you said they had 36 slots hahaha. i like to keep things simple. if they restrict the flow, just knock a few tabs out :)

Something i've seen it to but a t on the bulkhead fitting, and have two strainers 90* form the bulkhead fitting. Takes up a little extra space but even if it clogs a little it will still flow plenty.
