Okay, so I have a 55gallon tank (48" long) that I was thinking about putting 2-4 convicts into. I hear though that they breed like bunnies. So my question is this - I don't really want to have to try to find homes for 200+ fry every month, so will the pair that isn't breeding eat the others fry? Or, I also have another tank with some electric yellows, sp44s and red zebras. Could i put the fry in there and just let them get eaten that way? Ideally I'd like it so they just get eaten out of the tank they're in, with no interference from me, but I see the parents can be brutal at making sure their fry survive. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Will the 2 pairs of convicts be the only fish in the 55? (If you get only 2 fish the fry will most likely survive, if you get 2 pairs the other pair MIGHT eat the babies) I think your best bet would be to get a couple of catfish (I'd suggest the featherfin catfish as it's spikes are used as protection) in with 1 pair of convicts and the catfish will pick the babies off

sometimes a mature pair will eat their own babies when theyre ready to spawn again. Thats what mine did. Theyd be awesome parents for 2 weeks, eat their babies, make more babies. But that can cause aggression sometimes when one parent sees the other as a threat to ze babies

ya, I was thinking it would be just them in there. Fish stores around here are few and far between, and the couple larger ones around here that aren't Petsmart have been known for their mistreatment of the pets they sell. I'd much rather not give them my money, so it may be hard to find certain types of catfish around here.
Im starting to wonder if it would be worth keeping convicts then if I can't find any of those types of catfish around. Living in Canada makes mail order out of the question too, with the astronomical customs fees.
I was trying to think of a fairly common fish that would reach about 8" or so that wouldn't require feeder fish or anything like that. Regular water changes and pellets are my kinda thing lol. Any thoughts? And yes....I know convicts wouldn't get that big. Just my mind running a mile a minute as usual with a billion different ideas.

Ya, but I don't have a passport to cross the border. Not too sure about crossing the border anyways with pets. They might give me a hard time with that, and I certainly don't want the rubber glove treatment when I give them attitude (which knowing me I most certainly would) Last time I crossed the border was just before the passport thing happened and they had me at the gate for about 25 minutes asking me where I was going (shopping), where at (don't know) why not (because I dont know what Im buying) why not (because I dont know whats for sale till I see it), who's in the car (my wife and my son) how long have you been married (8 years) where did you get married at (are you serious?) yes (a church) when was your son born (well, he looks about 4 so random guess - 4 years ago) are you getting smart with me (wouldnt be hard) whats that mean (my point exactly) how much money do you have (I dunno) why not (because I carry credit cards and debit cards so americans wont steal my money since its worth more lol) do you have any illegal weapons (if I did would do you think Id honestly tell you) then comes the smack from my wife....so you can see how me crossing the border would go. LOL Needless to say, I've saved my $100 and haven't bothered with a passport. Sorry, kinda off topic I know. My point being, although I love the fact that I can watch American TV instead of the crap aired on canadian channels, and I love american music better than canadian, and the food, the roads.......geeze I could go on and on.....but none of it is worth the hassel of dealing with the border guards who have a God complex.

I understand, that's why I don't have a passport either.

I would not breed cons with other fish in the tank in anything less than a 90....
