So for the few years before i joined mfk i always fed my needle fish, and two catfish feeders straight from pet smart. After joining mfk i notice that that is probably a bad idea. I understand feeders can be unhealthy but if i want to keep feeding my fish feeders how can i do it safely? I want to set up my 10gal as a feeder tank so i don't have to keep going back and fourth to pet smart ill just buy a lot and keep them in the tank. I know some people breed their own feeders but i just don't have the time for that. any ideas on making feeders safe for my fish to eat?

You can set up a feeder tank to hold them, either treat the fish in that tank with coppersafe or you could treat the incoming fish in a different container before placing them in your feeder tank.If you treat them before putting them in your feeder tank you'll be sure that they are ready to be used as food.It is also good to feed your feeders and fatten them up.

The way i have done it for around a decade is

  • Buy a new batch of feeders
  • treat them for 3-5 days for parasites and fungus- using jungle labs parasite tabs and fungus clear
  • During that time I feed them a good quality tropical flake food
  • Then feed away
I keep 2 feeder tanks going so that i can process a few hundred feeders at a time. One for feeding and one for treating.
