Hey guys, I just picked up a 55g set-up that I plan on moving my 29g stock into sometime next week, however I haven't had the pleasure of doing anything with corals yet! The set-up came with a coralife lunar fixture, its 48inches with 4x 65 watt bulbs, 2 are 10,000K daylight and the other two are actinic, with 3 LED Lunar lights as well. When looking into purchasing corals, they always say "moderate to high lighting", but me being a coral newbie, I'm not sure what this type of lighting would be considered on a plain jane 55g. I'm mostly interested in softies, but there are a few hard corals that have caught my eye and was just curious about any information you guys could give me on this. Thanks!

Try an armor of god, just to see if everything is ok, if you can keep it going, you could basically keep anything going. I have the halide lights and am doing well, getting the LED's soon though. Hopefully you can grow more than an aiptasia lol best of luck

I have a very similar fixture. On a 55 gallon that would be considered some where inbetween moderate to high lighting. IMO, super blue bulbs are better than actinic as the coral can use more the light from a super blue and you still get the benifits or reduced risk of nasty algae.

You have options for bulbs to make that fixture even better.

i dont want to go up to halides simply because I figure if I can't grow it with this fixture, its not worth the power bill. What are some other good bulbs besides the super blue?

+1 to the others comments...you should be in the clear with softies for sure, and most likely LPS. SPS probably do able...but you have some learning to do before you get there anyways it sounds like.

GL, and keep us updated.

thanks guys! I work at the LFS, so I've been getting many opinions, but as with any type of fish keeping, I like to get as many opinions as possible. I'll post pics when I get it up and running, which will hopefully be wednesday or thursday!

quick update...my buddy from work is coming today to help out with the set-up...so I will try my darndest to get pics up tonight after work. If not, tomorrow after class for sure!
