Quick Question - Diff between Internal and hangon filter?

Hi, just have a quick noob question - whats the diff between an internal and hangon filter?
I am wanting something to go into my quarantine tank that has a sponge filter already, but it doesnt pick up the poo - so need a filter to do this. Will both perform this job?

A quick solution to your poo problem is a gravel vac, it's just a syphon.

Both filters will do the job. I personally like External HOBs.
