I just took apart my ac110 because it was making the loud humming sound (i have sand). I washed everything off, scrubbed it, and when I put the rod that holds the impeller back in, it still makes that sound. I know I am going to need a new impeller, but I think I am going to need a new motor since the inside of it (where it holds the impeller) has grooves in it. My question:

Does the rod that goes in it have a tight fit or do i barely set it in there? When it's barely in there it is still loud but doesn't make the sound. If i shove it in with pliers, the sound comes back.

Help?

Yeah i had the same filter replaced the impeller and still that blasted hummmm. I think the motor must need to be replaced, but its still running for now. I figure if that impeller can wear down than the motor armature must be able to also

The impeller shaft is possibly worn down. Examine the shaft diameter when you take it out. If it is thinner in the middle, where the impeller sits, then you need a new shaft. I don't think the grooves in the motor cavity will be a problem. They are only there because the impeller has been wobbling around on the shaft.

The shaft should be installed completely into the motor housing so it is held securely and completely centered.

I have never been able to find a replacement shaft so I am using an Eheim 2217 impeller shaft in both my AC110's. It is almost an inch too long but they have been running great, no noise, for almost a year now.
