I am in the process of setting up my first tank for a few years, and really enjoying getting back into it.
I intend to have a well planted tank.I would like to use heater cables to heat the substrate and am wondering if it would be possible to use the heater cables to heat the rest of the tank therefore doing away with standard heaters.
Is this a viable option, the tank in question is around 105 us gal.

You 'could' do it, but you would need a lot of heater cables, which will cost 40-50 times as much as just getting a heater. I personally don't use heater cables at all, as I think they are a waste.

If you had a sump (not W/D) you could hide the heaters in there...hint, hint :D.
