First of all I'd like to thank beblondie for the Bichir primer. Definately gave me a lot of info and answered a lot of my questions.

I'm wondering about the growout process. I read about it in the primer, but it seemed like that was for a single specimen. If I were to get three Senegal's (all ~3" long) should I skip the 10G phase and start them off in a 20G long? From what I've seen on here they seem pretty content to pile onto each other, but I don't want to crowd them in there either.

Any advice & suggestions are welcome :D

yeah, beblondie is great! fish are like caged birds. no matter how large the tank is, they're still contained. they should be free! so, definitely skip the 10g phase & go as large as you can & let them enjoy life!

I honestly think that they grow quicker if they have more room! :D

I definitely agree with moonchild! Keep the water as crysal clear and clean as possible, and feed high protein food (starting them on pellets at a young size is the best bet).

I prefer the 'mini' size hikari sinking gold pellets for juvies, because it's the perfect size even for the smallest retail bichirs (2" usually).

I'm growing out a bunch of babies in a 40g right now. :)

treat the 20 the same way as the 10 gallon-Anne

thanks everyone, hopefully I can start cycling a tank for them soon
