hi all can anyone tell me if NGT's can withstand full strength seawater if aclimated carefully from total fresh ? cheers Paul :)

i wasn't about to do it just for info really in case i returned to marines but i wouldn't do it at all now though as he's my fave fish, thanks for replies Paul

I have no experience with salt or brackish tanks, but I have a friend that swears acclimating a brackish fish to full salt is the same as acclimating one to full fresh.

It can work depending on the species of fish in question. Just like how some brackish fish do well in fresh, and some don't. Some brackish fish will do well in full salt, and some won't.

Not worth the risk in my mind.

I dont understand why anyone would keep any datnoides in brackish/salt. The most expierenced keepers on here have always kept theres in total fresh wheather it be a NGT or a silver, or any of them. Its usally the "special" fish store keepers that like to put these fish in brackish. All datnoides will live a long and happy life in total fresh. Enough said.

mainly because NGT's and AT's are found in brackish in the wild but NGT's do really well in fresh and AT's do better in brackish from all the info i have got,the question was for info only as said earlier these two are brackish fish in the wild

http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/speciesSummary.php?ID=14698&genusname=Datnioides&speciesname=polota

"Lives in brackish water at the mouths of large rivers and coastal lagoons, as well as in freshwater lakes and rivers above tidal influence"

Not all of them are found in brackish.

that must be why NGT's can live long lives in fresh ! thanks for that

If you no longer want the fish, dont try to kill it just send it to me.I'm looking for another one.
