I was wondering if having a spray bar in vertically would be ok. And if someone on here has it that way, would you be kind enough to post pics? Thanks in advance.

you can, the spray at the top of the vertical bar will most likely not be as strong as it would at the bottom though. other than that it should not matter

thanks i figured that much. plus not to worried about flow up top, i have plenty of that from my returns in wet/dry hitting top of water level in tank. just wanted to make sure it would be ok with my 405 which i will be attaching a spray bar to.

yup, should not be an issue at all. just make sure the lower holes and the spraybar stay clear and to not back up pressure on your canister.

yeah, in the past I have had spray bars going vertical, horizontal and at varying angles too . . . it was never a problem

but no pix, as I no longer use spray bars . . .

Why did you stop using them?

I stopped using spray bars as well. I saw no need to put strain on filter pumps. I use an air pump to airate the tank. I think that is why people use them? I also make sure that i put my filter intake at one end of the tank and out put and the opposte end of the tank,

This is to get a good water cross flow and avoid recirculating the same filtered water all the time. and reduce "dead spots" in the tank.

I am newb to the forum but i am a HVAC mechanic by trade and good plumbing principles on my tank

I switched to pipe outlets, for two reasons:

1) stronger flow from a single outlet
2) less noticeable

I keep my outlets below the surface, to keep the tank quiet . . . and because I keep planted tanks, I don't want too much surface disturbance. and I just didn't like looking at those long spray bars in my tanks

the pipe outlets are much less visible, and they create a strong current, similar to a small water pump . . .
