I believe i have a JD pair and since i put them in a tank my female has little nicks from her scales (expected) but also her tail fin has a split in it going from the end of the tail to the body about half way.

Is this normal caused by the male because he also has it just not as bad?

There both small less than 4 inchs.

Thanks.

can you post a picture? that sounds a bit more aggressive than just regular spousal abuse, you might have 2 males with the less dominate one just not showing as much color. how large is the tank? its possible its a pair but they just feel like they don't have enough space

the only pictures i have is my avatar pic and its the one on the right that has the split tail fin. I have a 150g tank with multiple rocks wood and plants for cover. they seem deferent enought in fin shape and coloring that other on another post decided it was male and female.

now after being gone for 8 hours she/it has another split just above it and not as far in.

should i move her/it to another tank or move the other?
any advice?

yeah i cant tell from that picture i would need a closer up pic of their faces, but yeah i would either separate them and then try again once they are healed or get some egg crate from lowes/home depot or something and cut it to size and use it as a divider, this is what i would do since once they are healed you can take it out without having to do a whole new introduction and move things around since they were still seeing each other, if they are indeed male and female then they should eventually start to like each other, usually dempseys arent that hard to pair up (my old male dempsey even bonded with a female GT i used to have lol), thats definitely a nice tank you have there, maybe adding in some male cons or something to divert their attention will help once they are healed up...
