:popcorn:i have heard about people making their own aquariums, how hard is it, is it costly and what materials would u need, and how safe is it for your fish??? like say to make a 55gallon...is it cheaper to buy a kit or to attempt to make one???:nilly:

Most economical way to get a 55g aquarium is to buy used off of craigslist. Otherwise buy new I don't think you'll save much money by building your own of that size.

craigslist would be cheaper if you can be patient. i've was looking for quite some time but finally found a 125g for $125.
I have called glass and acrylic people in my area and it didnt seem worth the price.

you just missed out on the petco 1$ a gallon deal, but id try craigslist you can get em cheap

^^agree^^ You really only start to save money when the tank size gets up around 300g. 1/2" glass is realatively cheap and they are making tanks up to 240g with 1/2". When you start getting bigger and start needing thicker glass, say 3/4", the price for this construction goes up quick.

for a 55 either wait for the petco/petsmart dollar a gallon sale or buy a used one, I see complete 55 setups with tank/stand/lights/filters for $100 or less on craigslist all the time
