I was just wondering whether an idea I had for a moonlight substitute would work. I was going to put a normal desk lamp on the top of my tank and put a blue compact fluorescent bulb in it. My question is whether or not the cfl will generate too much heat and break the glass canopy. (I ask because I have done something similar with an incandescent bulb.) I know cfl's burn much cooler though, and I'd like to give it a shot if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It will probably be fine... but I'd add a small spacer just to be safe,

Easier just to get some blue cellophane to cover tank with, and use whatever lighting you want outside of the cover, imao. * If you are worried about the 'heat' aspect of a light inside the cover, why not use an LED? Good luck.:)
