I've got a 29g that I just set up in our living room, and I've cyled tanks before, but I don't want to wait so long! I've got a 55 and a 20 in my bedroom that are both fully established, and I'm planning on taking an entire hang on back filter, media and all, from the 55 and running it on the 29 for a few days. How should I go about this? I know the bacteria will need ammonia, so how long should I let the filter run before I add a few hardy fish? And is there anything else I forgot that I should do during this process? Any information is appreciated!

I'd take about 20 gallons of water from the 55, some gravel, the hob, and call it cycled :)

I bet you would be fine after one day. You could take a few cups of gravel form the other tanks and put into the 29, that would help alot too. I do this all the time because im impatient too! :)

Well, if the filter pads fit, take them out of the 50 and put them in the filter of the 29.

Or you can just add the filter to the tank but you need to have your other filter running as well to seed it.

You will need to have stock in the tank ASAP though... the bacteria need something the eat so you need fish in there to poop.

haha...its like an easy button. but i am getting figure 8 puffers, so i know they'll be a little more suseptible to ammonia and nitrites/nitrates since they're scaleless or w/e, so what can I throw in there for a few days just to satisfy my need to believe I accually cycled it? Whatever goes in their is either going to be dinner for the puffers or my africans, so what would be good for that?

i've got a secondary filter on the 55 that will be introduced to its new home on the 29, and a new secondary for the 55. What fish should I throw in there, like I said previously, my puffers aren't going to be the first guys seeing this tank, but I want something either they, or my africans, will eat.
