I'm definitely not using a 5g bucket this time. Will I get a good enough flow rate from my backyard hose to pour perhaps 50 lbs at a time into a container and stir it as it rinses out? Anybody done it this way?

Hello; The first time I decided to use sand, a long time ago, I had no idea how dirty the stuff could be. I gave it a quick rinse and put it in a small tank. The tank took a long time to settle and would cloud up all the time.

If I am going to use sand, I now first sift it while still dry. I have used colanders and homemade screens. It depends on the size of the particles you want. I discard the very fine stuff. I usually put about a gallon or so of sand in a five gallon bucket ( I am not strong enough to try to do 50 pounds at one time.) I spray water with the nozzle set at the strongest jet untill the water covers the sand. I then stir the sand water mix with a smooth ended stick ( usually an old rounded broom handle) and qickly pour the dirty water off. I repeat this untill the sand is clean enough. I pour the clean sand into a second bucket or the tank and start the process over with another gallon or so of sand. The amount depends on how strong you are I guess.

If there is another quick and easy way, I woould like to know of it as well.

yea just an average pillocase its worked for me in the past i used playsand and thats really dirty but it cleaned it really quick.

You can also purchase pre-washed aquarium sand (at a steep price :))
