anyone have any ideas about what causes or inspires Oscars to change colors? I just picked up a tiger and a red and the red's face and fins turn black every now and then..

It could be a number of things....water quality is first that comes to mind. I would also supsect that hunger and tankmates could be some others.

when my dads tiger oscar gets angry and flairs at us throguh the glass he turns a strange grey colour... other than that water conditions, stressed out...

so what you're saying is that perfect water conditions cause stress..

why is everything ALWAYS because of stress...

I called a buddy of mine that runs a pond store.. he's kept oscars for years and the FIRST thing he asked me was "were you about to feed it?" ..answer being yes.. "lucky you.. that's a smart fish.. hope you got a nice lid on that tank, don't be surprised if it jumps to say hello when it's bigger"

he told me that when a red oscar goes black it's just a mood thing.. nothing to worry about.. over half the tank has plants and decorations.. there's TONS of cover so it's not stress. ..not to mention that in his experience, red oscars go pale when they're stressed or subdominant.

anyway.. I was just wondering if it was a common thing. apparently it is in Oscars.

yeah see? that's what I was looking for.. the real answer....

one minute it's "normal" then two seconds later the tail and fins and face were jet black.. ..then back again.. I think it's cool.

not "water conditions and stress" ..feh.. always seems to be an answer that leads to "something is wrong" and/or that people are asking questions as if something is wrong.

and by the way it followed me back and forth across the tank today as I walked around the room.. and when I grabbed food.. it actually waited til it saw the one it was waiting for and poof it changed colors real quick.. ...neat little fishie.. :D
