On drsfostersmith.com it says these pumps "are not self priming". Can anyone tell me what that means and how to prime the pump. I have it hooked up in a dry application (not submersed underwater.

Thanks.

Will it be plumbed below water level? If so you only need to start a siphon as you usually would and the pump will prime and return water back to the tank.

If it is plumbed with rigid line you can do this; if the tube goes up and over the top, you can put an airline tube up the intake side and suck the airpocket out of the top of the elbow.
This trick will ONLY work if both ends of the pipe is submerged.
if this didnt help, just try locating more info in the DIY section

a lot of pumps that are not self priming have a plug which can be removed to gain acccess to the impellor. once this is removed you can fill the impellor housing with water, replace the plug and start the pump. If there is no plug I would reccomend filling the housing by either pouring water down the output pipe or by using the siphon method mentioned above.

If you are using it externally, just make sure there is water in the lines before you start it up.
