Already sanded down the bubbled up housing inside where the impeller goes once and it worked for almost a year or so. Tried it again this time and snapped the ceramic shaft. Just got my replacement shaft today about 26 dollars. Put it together and it was still binding so I took it apart.....SNAP! I'm glad no one was home cuz I let some words fly pretty loudly. Kinda scared my dog. So I'm lookin for a new pump to go in my sump. Still have one Quiet one 5000 working but i'd like to phase it out. My question is what kind of pump are you running and how long have you had it? I know I could look up past threads but kinda wanna hear some up to date feedback.

So I've been researching in between responding to all the post's I've been getting on his thread :irked: and I'm thinking of drilling my sump and going with an external pump like a reeflo dart. Can pumps like that be throttled back without harming them? Anybody here make the switch from submersible to external?

I run a QuietOne 3000. I don't care for it! It doesn't always restart when I power cycle it. I won't buy another QuietOne.

That's funny cuz that's one problem I never had with them though I have heard of other people saying the same thing. Mine would always come back on they would just rattle like hell for a while in the process. It's just hard to go with another pump cuz of the price. Although when I purchased my 2 5000's they were about 95 dollars a piece and now the cheapest I've seen is $140. I was hesitant buying them then and now I'm hesitant venturing into the unknown of other pumps. I've seen your threads on your d.e. filter what pump do you run on it?

I've been running a Laguna Max Flo 4200 on my tank for over 1 year and I am very happy with it.

I would take a look at the Lagunas. They are one of the most efficient submersibles out there, they run quiet and they have a solid track record.

Check out page 7 of 72 of for their flow chart: http://www.lagunaponds.com/lagunaeng/careguides/2012-Laguna-Catalogue.pdf

Thanks for the info I'll look into them. To be honest I've been looking to getting an external pump like a dart. With two 5000 pumps I had to valve them back to not overwhelm my overflows. But with those two pumps I think I was a 210 watts. The snapper dart hybrid would be less and it would free up room in my sump for bio or some pothos. And I could always T off the plumbing for a uv sterilizer. I'm going to keep looking though.

I started with a 1/4hp high head pump for my DE filter which is small compared to the 1+ hp pool pump the DE filter is made to run with. I am now using the tiny QuietOne 3000 pump on the DE filter and it is working perfectly... other than the restart issue. But it wouldn't restart on the first try without the DE filter in the loop either. I had very serious doubts that such a small pump as the 3000 would be usable on the DE filter. The huge filtering area of the DE appears to impose negligible back pressure at the low flow rate of the tiny 3000 pump... I wouldn't be able to distinguish the difference in flow rate between having the DE in the loop or out of the loop visually. A 5 gallon buck and a stop watch might show a quantitative difference.

I might not be patient enough to let my QuietOne 3000 work through the noise when restarting. I usually plug it in and if it doesn't sound right immediately I unplug it and replug it instantly. It kind of seems to be less problematic the older the pump gets.

The main reason for switching to the QuietOne 3000 from the big pump was $$$ the big pump was adding to my electric bill. I too went the QuietOne route due to their reasonable price. When I move back to a big tank I will be doing some serious pump shopping to find a pump inbetween the 3000 and the 1/4hp pump with good flow and good efficiency.

From what I've seen on some reef keeping websites, there are some folks that are running the Lagunas externally without any problems. My main issue with external, direct drive pumps is the seals failing and leaking. Perhaps I just had bad luck with a string of 5 or 6 (Honestly, I lost count) external direct drive pumps that had a steady drip coming from the seal where the shaft enters the impellar chamber, but I don't think I'll go back to using them.

Another option for an external pump is the New Reeflo Blowhole pumps...apparently they are dead quiet and pretty efficient, although they are newer so they don't have that long of a track record.

I have a Quiet one 6000 and I run it EXTERNALLY for my 150 gallon. Love it.

Yeah I saw the blowhole pumps but the size I needed I think wad just being put out as a new option. I really want the reflow to work but I get what you''re saying about the seals. And submersible style pumps will always be quieter. Just liked the flow option of around 2000 gph or 3000gph with a simple impeller swap. A little more money up front but less down the road. I can't tune out the voice in the back of my mind that says just by another QO 5000.
