I received the go signal to set up an aquarium in the living room. It needs to be pretty and quiet. I prefer acrylic over glass.

What do you recommend for this set up? Built in filtration? Hob? Canister?

No more than 30 gallons I think...

A canister is definitely your best bet. They tend to be the quietest filters for sure!

Imo the very quietest set up is with built in filtration. These style tanks are very popular here in Thailand. They have internal overflow filters with a pump at the bottom then stacked bio media and filter pads on top of that. Disadvantage is that you have to keep the water level higher for them to work properly, but they are dead silent. If you need more flow or surface agitation just add a power head or small internal filter, though of course airstones or sponge filters will do the trick if you don't mind the air pump noise.

I'll add that insofar as water leakage, overflow or similar potential catastrophes, these are also likely the safest systems one could run.

Probably the quietest set up is a goldfish bowl, not to be recommended though.....

I think the all in one unit would be good or as like others have said a canister filter. For a 30G a good quality internal filter could work too.

Lots of members find the sound of bubbles and water soothing....

When I was younger I loved listening to the sound of the water hitting the surface from my hobs and now it is background noise for me.

Absolutely true. All my bubbling and swishing is soothing in my room :)

Sump it. A sump can not only be the most efficient and effective filtration system, but can also be dead silent with the proper drain setup and a decent dc return pump.

Canisters can be quiet, but i noticed my fx6 became progressively noisier over the course of the couple years i used it. I attributed it to wear and tear.
