I just got a new 75g and a sponge filter and HOB came with it and they're driving me insane. I've heard canisters are quiet but it seems many people pair them up with a different filter. can a canister filter handle a 75 g alone or will there need to be other things like powerheads (have them but never hooked them up to know if they're noisy) or anything else? a wet/dry is not an option at the moment. people have recommended 2217 and fluval 405's for this size of tank, but can that be it?

Thanks

What do you plan to stock?

Go with a pair of Ehiem canisters...I can hardley hear mine. in fact if i shut off the HOB filters on my tank i cant even hear the two canisters running!!!

if your not going to have a huge stock of fish( u shouldnt anyways ). go with like aaa up to 100gallon canister filter, or higher, but im sure your keeping price in mind. I have a rena xp2 and thats the quitest filter running on any of my tanks. The loudest would be my wet/dry. looking for quitness, i dont suggest one.

one thing to remember is you can never have to much filtration.
but you can have to much of a current

get 2 aquaclear 110's. their quiet, take up no extra space in a cabinet, and work wonders.

theres a reason the AC filters have been a staple in the hobby for so many years.

i ran a xp3 on my 75 is was really quiet, didnt know if it was running or not sometimes

Thanks for the replys and suggestions. So a canister filter is enough - like the ones suggested? Will I need anything to get rid of 'dead spots' or will these filters create enough of a current? Also, 2 aquaclears - isn't that going to be noisy? The HOB I have now is a Penguin biowheel. However I do like the idea of freeing up cabinet space since I have a 10g quarantine down there.

The fish I currently have are:

3 Geo sp. altimira
1 Geo sp. surinemisis
2 clown loaches
1 boesmani rainbow
1 dwarf neon rainbow.

I was thinking of adding one more loach, a shoal of firehead tetras, and a couple rainbows. Is this too many? will I need a larger tank? I wanted to be able to add another geo if my lfs ever gets in any red tapajos...
