I had an Ornate Bichir for 6 years, and has hidden in his cave for about 5.9 years. I really don't see him much except when I feed him, but they are such cool fish, especially when they get big. Anyways, I threw some pellets in the tank today, and he didn't come out. I took a flashlight and looked in his cave, and he wasn't there. I searched the whole tank, and no where. I thought, O S***. This has happened with my gar 3 times, which is why my tank is very well sealed. So, I started searching around the basement and finally found him, unfortunately, to late. My gar got out 3 times quite a few years back (god knows how) but since they're part air breathers, he actually got a pretty good tour of the house, plus a few battle scars.. Anyways, just a reminder to everyone, keep your tanks sealed, they can be quite the escape artist, and keep an I on your fish. JK, Ive lost many fish and I'll be fine.

that sucks man, a little off topic but were in wisconsin are you located?

For the Question above, Eau Claire. How he escaped, I think it must have gotten into my overflow box, and went up from there. They are part air breathers, so I was hoping I found him soon enough, like I had with the gar, but he was done for. Ive only got the gar left in my 120g in-wall tank, so it looks pretty boring. I trying to decide if I'm going to keep the gar, or start back with some smaller fish, that will of course get big again. I just can't seem to find anything big enough that the gar won't hunt down. Could be a while before my datnoid is big enough, and even then, gar still might attack. Its pretty aggressive.
Oh, and nigaharu, the Bichirs can live to 30yrs or so.
