does anyone have an opinion weather a reverse osmosis unit is necessary to maintain a reef aquarium?

it's never necissary but with a 100+ gallon tank i would think it a wise investment... a small home unit can do 50 gallons a day and is probably less $$$ than a skimmer for a 100+ gallon tank...

I would suggest you invest in a good RO unit for a Reef. Although I moved on from Reef to Marine Predators, I still use my six stage RO unit for every water change. A large RO unit, running in conjunction with a "Super efficient" skimmer is essential for creating Marine water parrameter harmony.
