You should use it every time you do a water change. How often you do water changes are dependent on a number of things including stocking levels, type of corals, filtration, feeding, etc. You will have to figure this out over time and how your system looks/tests/inhabitants.

I will say that it is better to do more frequent smaller water changes than big ones spread apart farther. As a general rule, you need to do at least one water change a month. 2 or more a month would be better.

I do about a 20% water change every 2 weeks and my filtration is better than most. Tank is relatively lightly stocked.

On a whole other note, I would NOT buy RO from the store, it will cost you $$$$$$$$. It is a much better investment to buy your own RO or RODI filter.

Whenever I do water changes, I just siphon 20% and refill with ocean water from the LFS every 2 weeks. If you are mixing your own, definitely only mix with RO/DI water.

When topping off just use RO/DI water, don't use salt water.

ok so when it comes time to fill my tank for the 1st time do i have to use all ro water

that would be expensive and take a long time, however my initial fill, I did with tap water and it gave me nothing but trouble with dinoflagellates, diatoms and turf algae. NOT FUN. I think most people probably use tap for the initial fill and then switch to RODI.

RO water is the Holy Grail of reef keeping. I had so much trouble with algae that it killed my 90g. I do a 10% changed per week and have no algae woes any longer. My problems now consist of pulsing xenia growing out of control! Problems, problems...

That's usually normal, however, for new tanks - regardless of the water used.
