I'm currentlyon debate on getting a water softer and a r/o water system for drinking and for my fish. from my understanding r/o water takes all traces of minerals and whatever is in the water... so that leaves the fish with no plain water w/ nothing in it... is this good? what about electrolytes? and water softer actually puts some salt in the water in replacement for the magnesium and calcium (these are two elements that contribute to scalling, hard water and lime build up everwhere their is water):screwy:

That is exactly what I did and I'm very happy with results. You can get potassium bags instead, they cost $2 more per 40 pound bag. Instead of sodium, thats better for you anyway. As for the tank water, it does take out minerals, but you can buy something like stress zyme to help it get going again. As long as you have good biological filtration, I think you'll be fine.

I almost forgot, if you decide to do this let me know. I know where you can get an 100 gpd ro unit for like $200.00/free shipping.
