Mods, please shift this if it's in the wrong sub forum...

So my parents have told me getting a dog while at uni is stupid... given I need them on board for occasional help looking after I'm out of luck :'(

So, they have approved me getting a hamster, rabbit or guinea pig... I've had guinea pigs and am thinking a rabbit or a hamster. If I went the hamster route it would be a Syrian, but I think rabbits are more cuddly etc... anyone got k opinions?

Right breeds... I don't know much about breeds. If I could I'd have a giant but they're the size of the dog I want so they're out... I want a small to medium rabbit, with an even temperament, but a good personality... long ears are good but not too much that they are prone to infections. I want a fairly hardy breed that are ok to live inside and are fairly intelligent... any ideas?

Basically fish aren't satisfying my need to be around animals anymore :( so need something fluffy as well

Just a question to begin with, why does a rabbit having the size of a small dog rule out the ability to care for it?

So - are you living at home while you are at University? Or would the animal be living with you ? If that is the case, is it even allowed ? That's the first question I would want answered.

I would not expect my parents to take care of my pet - unless if they offered to, or if it was a pet I've had a long time, and needed to go out of town for a few days.

If this is a question, or a concern, even before you have the animal - don't get it. It's not fair to the animal, or your parents.

My wife had rabbits growing up. They where great for her. I thought I would be nice and get her one and the stupid thing kept biting me. Don't know what it had against me. But anyways the one we got was a dwarf lion mane. Beautiful little thing. She named it Ralphy I called it Grey Bastard (cause the biting)! Anyways off topic again. You may want to look into dwarf lion mane they stay small. You cant keep it in a cage all day like you could a hampster or gerbil you have to let it out to roam around. You also have to spend time with it or it may start biting.

I'd be living in my own flat, and yes animals are allowed... large rabbits aren't as easy to persuade people to look after, and it is only when I'm off on field trips I'd need help on (about two weeks a year) I wouldn't be expecting anyone to look after my animals just if I have to. I'm basically looking for an animal which is fairly adaptable in case I move around the country a bit (or even out of the country) and dogs aren't as easy plus they are a longer term commitment (past the end of my degree and hopeful phd) my parents are willing to look after them - hence why I wouldn't get a rat etc because they don't like them. I look after their dog when they need it as well so it's not a one way street of me being irresponsible.

I'll definitely look into that breed - not one I've come across... small is good as need room for fish lol

The rabbit I had as a kid (offered to look after for a week, stayed till it died two years after) was a vicious thing...
