Hi, I have an Fiskars 57 gallon rain barrel in my shed i no longer use, I got an eshopps 1800 overflow box off of ebay and wanted to turn the rain barrel into a sump to increase water volume and hide heaters for my 225 gallon. will this work and is it safe? the material it is made out of is polyethylene?? is this fish safe? I will post photos when done thanks I am new here

Not sure about the material being safe you'll defo want to check that out , but I like the idea of using one of those like a giant canister filter ?

Fiskars website says it is High Density Polyethylene, i think it is safe im going to give it a go, i think it might leach only at very high temps. duanes that is just what i want to do,

very cool....i am started a 300 gallon build soon and this is an awesome idea....can anyonone post how they actually built this to work and the size of return pump you used on this....thanks

Well on my pond, I have a pump beside the pond. The intake is in the deepest part of the pond, and the outflow is dumping into the top of the rain barrel. The water runs through filter floss, then over bio media, then through a peice of screen. It then just dumps back into a pond through a hole cut out of the bottom. It works well, and by increasing the size of the hole(or pipe) at the bottom of the barrel, it becomes even more wet/dry. I personally oversize the pipe and put a valve on it, then you can partially close the valve to fine tune the water level within the filter.
