rain barrel - need siphon/pressurizing idea

hey all

i'm planning on setting up a rain barrel to house the water from my weekly water changes. however i would like to somehow hook it up to lawn hose to water the lawn/plants. i don't think i will ever get enough pressure from a hand pump to do this.

1) can i use some sort of "Y" connection with one end connected to the barrel, the other end the house spigot and "out" to the garden hose? will it siphon the water out of the barrel when i open the spigot?

2) i was thinking of keeping it linear too, meaning connecting the house spigot to operate thru the barrel, but i was worried about backpressure into the line back to my tanks even with a valve.

any one have any suggestions/ideas?

could you connect an alternative hose to a powerhead perhaps?
 
You can use any size of sump pump, all the way up to one that will drive a sprinkler system.
 
If the barrel is sealed you can pressurize it with your home water system (it needs to have an anti-syphon valve between house and tank), but you will be filling the barrel with fresh water as you go and would have to drain that when finished.

You could build a solar collector to heat air and use the hot expanded air to pressurize the barrel

Elevate the barrel for gravity feed (like old water cisterns) , now filling the barrel is your only problem.
