I just had a thought, has anyone tried to collect rain water from eavestroughs (spelling?) and use that for doing your water changes? I would be wary of the bin keeping it clean of debris ect. But would this work or is it out of the question?

uhm id be more afraid of impurities. plus you have to live some where it rains 24/7

I'd be worried about the water running down my roof, and then getting stagnant in the collection barrel. Plus acid rain, pollution, etc.

On the other hand, fish live in that water in nature.

my neighbors have a rain barrel that they let me borrow from. i only use the rainwater for topping off tanks though not for water changes.

He lives in Saskatchewan Canada. For those with no clue where that is, its about 200 miles north of Montana. For those who don't know where Montana is, just beat your head against the computer screen till you see blood, then look at the map on Google. If you still can't find it, then your computer is broken. Put it back in the box it came from and take it back to the store, then tell them your too stupid to own a computer.

BTW, I have no Idea why I'm typing in italics, as I did not select it. Highlighting it and then selecting it does nothing. Its very odd that it started at the last letter of Saskatchewan.

Anyways, my point. I don't think you get enough rainfall to rely on it weekly for water changes. I doubt your pollution is anything to worry about. If you'd really like to give it a shot, get a small 10ish gallon tank and run it soley on rain water with some cheap Mollys or something. If it works, and you feel confident, move up to a larger tank. Just keep us posted on the experiment. If nothing else, sounds like something fun to do.

Ha Ha Ha pjsmetana thats awesome.
The smallest tank I have is 29g. with 2 yellow labs in it. I get your point with larger tanks I would need to collect lots of water and being in the middle of the prairies we get rain but not enough I think. Just trying to think of different ways to get water since the water here is basically well water. I am thinking of getting a puffer, I could use my empty 10g. tank to breed snails I could prob try it with that.

Air pollution is a funny thing with air currents and stuff. Remote areas are often more polluted than cities due to prevailing winds.

But in nature they aren't in a little glass box where all of the polluted water is concentrated into a very small area. That is a very bad idea imo.
