so i am moving into my own house so now i can finally move some of my hobby out of my living space. i am wanting to set up some ponds made from wood and pond liner outside to raise feeders and growout some of my cichlid babies. they are going to be around 500 gallons each.

my real question is how is rain going to affect my ponds. do i need soem kind of overflow to keep water from poring over the side. it would not be likely but i have seen it rain 8" in an hour. what about ph. there will be alot of plants so do i need to do water changes as often as my tanks or just if nitrate levels get high. any advice is great.

drill a few holes a few inches under the top,put screen over the holes or the fish will get out.
if your pond is up against the house like mine, you need some type of gutter, you dont want roof runoff in your pond.

oh and for bad storms "hurricanes" i put plywood over my pond.
the drain holes cant keep up with that much rain i would guess.

Midnights seems to have it covered well. I just want to add to check your rainwater's chemistry. Rainwater here is soft and slightly alkyd, just in case some of your fish are picky. And he's very right about the run-off, way too much junk coming off the roof - changing the water chemistry & the bacteria count (yuk).

Don't forget to send before & after pics of the ponds.

....

Are they done yet?!

they won't be against the house because of the tin roof.

i'm still in the prosses of moving my tanks i havn't even gotten any furniture moved yet

don't worry there will be picks.

The only 'furniture' you need are tank stands. Let's get moving and quit playing around. (hey, is ths considered arm-chair quarterbacking? )

Good Luck,

The rain would most likely induce breeding for your feeders. I have a pond in the ground and I just have a low corner where if it rains too much it flows out. Oh yea I just found a guppy in my pond today! Just thought I would share that. Kinda odd.
