After a routine water change, I went to pick my girlfriend up from campus, when we got back, our rainbow shark was dead but his tank mate the opaline gourami was alive. I quarantined the gourami and went to petsmart to get the water tested, but all the tests were fine. The ammonia was a small bit higher than recommended, but it shouldn't have been enough to kill the fish. The tank has been running for approximately 2 and a half months and the only fish that has died was a blue gourami that my opaline and rainbow killed and ate. I treated the water before adding it to the tank, which from a biological and chemical standpoint seem stable at least from tests. Does anybody have any idea what could have killed my rainbow in such a short period of time? The water temperature was also about the same as the water added so it shouldn't have been shock. Any theories would be appreciated as if its something i did and can avoid in the future i'd like to know about it.

ammonia should always be at a complete 0.
what filters are u using?
how often are your water changes?

Also was sinking and bloated not floating =\ i feed them 3x a day, one pinch of flakes in the morning, one pinch of flakes in the afternoon, one pinch of freeze dried bloodworms at night (all omega one)

maybe too much protein, bloodworms should be a treat for rainbow sharks

maybe died of bloat for this reason

maybe but i just started feeding them bloodworms in to the mix about 3 days ago when i finally got my bichirs for my bigger tank

an aqueon 20 for a 10 gallon and i change the water once a week =\

Im thinking it may be due to kidney or liver failure cuz when I had my frog he bloated up like a balloon and died, not sure if he sank or floated to the top prior to his death. Then again he was also 12 years old. BUt I agree with u, a slighty high ammonia level isnt enough to kill it.

maybe 25-30%?

What was the Ph? Ammonia is more toxic the higher the Ph. ANY amount of ammonia is toxic to fish and can kill them. I think it's a case that your tank was too small and the fish produced too much waste.
