This is more than likely a very stupid question, but I would like to clarify anyways.
Rainbow Shark + Red Tail Shark = Big No-No
Right?

If you have a 200 gallon or larger tank I think you could manage otherwise yes its a no no.

Tank is 55, the sharks are the same size (about 3"), tank mates are african cichlids (only 7 small ones)

The red tail has been with the cichlids for months now with no problems at all

There's plenty of hiding places and plants. Not 50, but there's a lot lol

use your best judgement but be ready to fish one out if over agression happens.

ehhhh I don't think thats a good idea, ones just gonna beat up the other and your gonna have to remove either the aggresor or the victim. It would work if they were both young, as they only get aggresive as they get older. I saw a 7 to 8 inch Rainbow and it was one of the meanest fish I've ever seen.

I'm hoping that the aggressive will be towards everyone (Like it is right now and how it's supposed to be in a cichlid tank) instead of only towards each other
