Hi,

Got hold of three gorgeous Rainbow snakeheads a few days ago. One of them developed what looks like a hole in its head (pictured). I think it might be a scratch from a piece of slate, but I'm worried it might be something more sinister.

Can someone take a look at hte pictures and tell me how I should treat it? The fish doesn't appear to be suffering too badly, but these snakeheads don't really move much, so it's hard to tell!

Please help!

Hello..........

What is the temperature you are keeping them in?

if it is more than 24°C ,it is a bacterial infection, that is specially on the Channa spec assam,if it is too warm for them!!!

They NEED colder temperature........they are NOT TROPICAL FISH !!!!

If it is this infection you can not do anything about it.......it will grow ,the fish will live for a while.......but still rots away......and at the end it will die!!!

Good luck!!

I have lost some of them at the beginnig as they were new discovered......
No I have learned and I keep them about 20°C....now they are fine (the new ones, the old infected ones are dead)

Anyone got anything more optimistic? The tank is 25C.

pallestopheles is spot on i did the same a few years back kept them at a high temp but i did have some luck with 1 of them. The usual applies do not use salt or any saline based medication in the past for cloudy eye and wounds I have used methylene blue but this normally requires take the fish out and quarantine it as the stuff is old school and turns every thing blue( Methylene blue is also used as a dye to stain certain parts of the body before or during surgery) but the plus is I have used it several times in the past and it has worked. Good luck

Ahhhh,something else:

Mostly the disease is noticed on female Lal Chengs.............

Just like yours!!

Im just gonna post in this thread instead of making a new one since its on-topic...

i have one channa bleheri and it was getting pretty beat up, think some tankmate was giving him a hard time, then today when i was looking at him i notice something white on his head and eye and remember reading this thread about the bacterial infection caused by too warm water..
My water is at 25-26° and im not going to lower the temp.
The channa is for sale as i dont have another tank for it but if the infection is the case i will try to get her moved ASAP.

Can you see from the pics what it looks like?
