Rainbow Snakehead

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oooh he's beautiful, really come into his size & color now. *is jelious*

I am adding to this existing Rainbow Snakehead thread (C. bleheri) if I may.

I have started keeping a few of these fish and I notice some have a distinct black dorsal spot near the caudal (tail) and some do not. Does this change with age? All are feeding well on Hikari carnivore pellets and are quite active and outgoing once they settle in. I have them in with some black spot barbs which they like chasing but the bold nature of the barbs seem to bring the rainbows out. There seems to be conflicting information about hard or soft water, low or high temperature, bright light or dark light etc. Currently they are in a medium planted tank with lots of floating cover and a few flowerpot caves. I would appreciate any other advice and comments from people who have kept them before.

Heres a couple of pics of my rainbow, since I posted the last ones he's grown.

Trying to upload some more pics but it keeps crashing, sorry.

Thats not a Rainbow they have Orange flame like markings in the tail.

If its body appears to be redder in real life rather than brownish as it is there its Channa species "Assam".

If thats how it appears(Brownish) to the naked eye plus the orange flash under its eye its a Channa Gachua varient from Bengal.

agreed , that is a gachua variant , it has pelvic fins so would rule out sp.assam

You know what i hate about the states is i can have one of these pretty fish. I dont understand why we cant if there in the wild here then there is nothing we can do so the damage is done let me have one of these fish man oh well i will just enjoy yours LOL.

unfortunatly the only ones that are in the wild in the us , are the real big guys. it does seem a shame that even the dwarf species are banned , but the goverment will argue that with many being temperate to sub-tropical they would still pose a threat to much of the us. and it is og course much easier to control if all channa are banned as most of them look identical as fry.

why not look into some of the more rare bettas (not fighters), there are some real nice ones out there that act and breed just as channa do and are just as colourfull , a small species that is often overlooked and a really good alternitive to something like a rainbow snakehead
