hey guys i was just wondering about rainbows in a tank i always pull minnows from the lake but they never seem to fare very well.
anyone have any success with them? and if so got any pics of your fish/tank

yea i guess thats true maybe i should just give up the dream lol.
pretty much all we got here is kokanee, rainbow, brook trout, lake trout i kinda wanted to have a setup with some native fish but meh. ill stick to my cichlids till i can figure it out more

i had brook trout and you have to keep the water cold and moving FAST!! and they like it dark ... its not a great fish for fish tanks .. but you might be able to do it .. talk to a fishery that stocks local streams and rivers.. they should be able to tell you more about them..

Trout would be kind of difficult, I have had this idea in my head but never the finances to bring it about. I'd start with a large tank, longer would be better. then a sump of almost equal size. The trout would need a lot of flow, highly oxygenated water, and cooler temperatures to keep oxygen high. So I'd need a chiller, high volume pump, I was thinking of putting lots of plants in the sump. It would take some trial and error, it would help if someone out there had some experience to learn from.

yea for some reason people dont really try it with trout lol. i can easily build a long tank and sump i have all the mats for it anyidea how much it costs to run a chiller?

LOL people are too busy eating the trout,as for the minnows they need plenty of aeration and cool water.I catch them at the creek and if they dont have some type of oxygen in the transport container half of them will be dead by the time I get home.I dont know how much it costs to run a chiller but I do know that the units themselves are rather pricey, even the cheaper ones cost a couple hundred bucks.

Never kept a trout but as for minnows, used to have them in a 3' fountain in ground w/no aeration. Water was cool but I imagine it did get warm during August. For keeping minnows in a tank, Large powerhead along with strong return flow from canister filter and no heater. If I can catch a trout, I would do the same and post results. Hopefully, soon
