My outdoor pond housing natives is under the overhang of my homes roof. Obviously poor planning, tonight's the first time its rained since setup and water is running off of the roof into my pond. Is this dangerous considering the waters running over shingles and lord knows what else...?

Wondering if I'm going to have to take down the pond and relocate :(

I use exclusively rain water in my fish tanks for the last 10ish years, never had a problem.

The shingles shouldn't be leaching anything into the water (if they are you have more problems then just your pond (like your roof dissolving)) and other then that it will just be the odd leaf or bird poo, but that should't be much.

Umm, if your roof has gutters, that shouldn't be happening. That is unless the gutters are draining into or around the pond. If that's the case, you can extend the gutters to drain elsewhere (just consider where so that the water goes where it's supposed to go...namely not near the house and not near your neighbor's house/yard.)

If you don't have gutters, (some folks don't), then I guess you may risk issues. Could pesticides end up on your roof? Could bird droppings, tree fruits, leaves end up there? Is there tar or adhesive up there that could leach out once it gets a lot warmer?

I'm not sure I'd go moving it yet until I had some better ideas of what could go wrong. On the other hand, if I had expensive or personally high valued fish, I'd probably either try to re-direct the rain water or move the pond.

Thanks. I'm sure the fish would be fine but I'm going to relocate the pond just for my peace of mind. Its an above ground so it won't be too difficult. But I'm guessing when the pond is out in the open rainwater is safe? I guess it has to be, just never thought about it. I'm usually an indoor pond kinda guy..

I.say if your roof isn't new to let the gutter feed your pond! It's great water! Test it!

And no, no gutters lol. I need to get on that..

A lot of places don't install gutters. If you are in an area with steep roofs and/or heavy snow, it's not uncommon to skip gutters due to the damage snow will do. (I had gutters in Chicago, but mine were set in such a way that snow was not an issue.) That's often why those types of roofs overhang so the water is dropped away from the walls and foundation.

Anyway, rain water itself is fine. All the pond fish love it.

What is your stock?
