Raising PH

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are many products available. I'm just begining to understand pH/kH, buffering etc.

I used this calculator the other day:

http://dataguru.org/misc/aquarium/calKH.asp

I raised my kh from 3 to 6 and my ph from 6.6 to 7.

The buffering helps maintain the ph. If it's too low, the ph can drop quickly. I disolved 7.2 tsp of baking soda in warm water and put it in to my 125.

It worked so far.

why do you need to raise the pH? unless you're doing saltwater, generally you're better of not manipulating the pH, just keep it stable

^^ I agree. In my case, I wanted to raise KH to help give the water more buffering capacity and keep the PH stable. The raising of the ph by .3 was a side effect. my KH was at 3 dkh and I got it to 6 dkh.

before that, I was loosing ph. my tap is 7.2ph and my tanks would show 6.0ph. I would do a WC and in a day or so, back to 6.0. This was on my 29. after raising the kh, it's much more stable. ph holds at 7.3.

I use crushed coral (in filter) or aragonite sand (as substrate) in my CA Cichlid tanks. There is no dosing to be done, and it keeps my ph a lot more stable than if I didn't use it due to my low kh out of the tap.
