What's the know-how to raise your own food?

Daphnia
Brine shrimp
Blood worms

?

I grow Daphnia magna, I usually get blood worms in the daphnia vat as well. I use a 300 gallons vat where I use a small mesh bag of grass clippings, about a four cups of arragonite sand and a ounce of miracle grow plant food. I let this aerate in full sun until it turns green and then I add a few hundred daphnia magna to start the culture going. It will produce for about 3 months. Aeration via large bubbles in necessary to get highest yields of algea and daphnia. When the culture starts to fail start up another vat and when it turns green transfer as many daphnia as you can get out of the old culture to the new one and clean out the old tank and wait until the new cultures starts to fail and start all over again! I get millions of daphnia like this. Enough to feed dozens of small to medium fish completely on daphnia.

Got some pix of that setup Moontanman?

No, I guess at some point I'm going to have to break down and buy a digital camera. I use a 300 gallon fiberglass tank and snap set swimming pools. One year i had tree 12 foot above ground pools set up and sold to the local pet stores (back when we had locally owned stores) They are really easy to grow.

WOW, that sounds awesome. what if i don't have a 300 gallon tank? Where do I get daphnia from? Do I have to treat water with anything? No filter needed, correct?

Before I got my fiberglass tank I used, and still use, children's snap set swimming pools. If you take reasonable care of them they will last two or three years and are great for growing daphnia., No filter just a air line on the bottom with no air stone. Add a few cups of arragonite sand so the water will have lots of calcium and add some grass clippings in a mesh bag for the green water. a little bit of miracle grow fertilizer and wait a week or so and you should get green water. Add some daphnia and you're off! I feed my fish earth worms, they make great conditioning food for larger fish. If you use a lot of insecticides in your garden I would recommend raising your own earth worms. See this link
