Anyone have any luck with ram cichlids in a low tech planted aquarium?? i'm in the middle of setting one up (20g) and was thinking of stocking selections. was thinking a schooling group of some type of tetras (probably neons) and a ram

You shouldn't have any trouble with that type of set up. My suggestion would be to use Cardinal Tetras with the Rams as they both enjoy a lower ph and water temps in the 80's. I would also source your Rams carfully some of the farm raised strains are juiced up and don't last very long. If you could find a breeder or one of the better sources like Jeff Rapps or The Shark Aquarium both right here in Jersey and look for imported wild fish or some F1/2's if available. I love Rams but you have to be careful where you get them from.

I've heard rams get more comfortable if you have other community fish around. So with neon tetras that would be fine, that's what i have along with some other schooling fish

I'm aiming to have Rams sometime next year

I agree, cardinals or green neons would be better choices than neons due to the higher temps blue rams prefer. Also keep in mind that not a lot of plants like the elevated heat either.
